Joey's Pancake House Maggie Valley, NC

They opened the little restaurant and named it Joey’s — down in Miami Beach, he had gone by Joe, but they decided Joey sounded friendlier. They learned to cook eggs and went home every night with pancake mix on their shoes. I was so sad when the original owner decided to close it down but glad she decided to sell it to someone and they run it the same way.

Visit Haywood Community College

That was 10 years ago, and Brenda says she spent the first nine and a half years crying. So you can imagine what she was like when it first happened. People asked, reasonably, if she was going to close the restaurant. And she knew Joey would want her to stay.

One of our favorites is Joey’s Pancake House. Let her tell you about it.Brenda met Joe O’Keefe in Miami Beach, where they worked at the famous Fontainebleau Hotel. “He was the most debonair man,” she says. “His blue eyes, they just sparkled.” He was 47, and she was 22, and neither one cared. They came to Maggie Valley to visit friends in the summer of 1966. As they lingered in town, they noticed a little restaurant building that was up for lease.

You may be thinking why visit a community college in the first place? The first time I visited this place, it was to play disc golf. They have a challenging but beautiful course. Maggie Valley is home to one of the prettiest golf courses I have ever seen.

Although I have not played here yet, this is on my list of things to do one day. I have ridden around it and also stayed on it in the past and the course is so pretty. Maggie Valley is home to many fun activities whether you want to play golf, fish, hike, or shop. I am going to share with you a few of our favorite things to do while we visit Maggie Valley, North Carolina besides just the obvious (Eating at Joey’s Pancake House).

Come hungry and we’ll take care of the rest. Iconic Breakfast & BrunchStack our pancakes high and enjoy endless rounds of coffee while enjoying the beauty of Maggie Valley. We’ve been around for over 50 years and still have lines out the door with our loyal breakfast enthusiasts returning every year (or week!). If you dive up Highway 19, headed towards Cherokee, North Carolina there is a pull-off on the left-hand side of the road where you can visit Soco Falls.

They tasted like a lot of pancakes I have gotten at other places. If you go, just don't have high expectations. The trail to the waterfall is very short but also it is very steep. Be careful if you go in the wintertime as the overspray from the waterfall will make the rocks and bridge icy and slick.

Next time you are in the area make sure you stop in to try some of the best breakfasts served up in Western North Carolina. Trip Advisor has them ranked at number 1 in Maggie Valley and I tend to agree with that ranking. Joey’s has been around a while even in a town that has passed its heyday.

But Brenda thinks of it as a family, too, and of course you know who is first in her heart. Joey’s name is still on the sign, and his face is still on the menu, and Brenda says she can feel him in the building. She never expected to be here, never expected to be doing this. But it’s been 44 years now, and she’s proud of what she and Joey built.

Joey’s Pancake House typically accepts both cash and major credit cards, making it convenient for most customers. However, it’s always a good idea to check their payment options in advance, as policies can change. Joey’s Pancake House operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations are not usually required. However, during peak tourist seasons, there may be wait times, so arriving early can help you secure a table more quickly.

Brenda didn’t plan to run a restaurant. She didn’t plan to live in Maggie Valley. And she definitely didn’t plan to be doing both those things for the past 44 years. But how she got here is not as much about business as it is about love.
